Limerick supports the Wayúu Tayá Foundation that helps women and children by improving nutrition and by providing education and health care for the poorest and most ignored indigenous Latin American community.
The Wayúu Tayá Foundation is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization founded in 2002 by Venezuelen model and actress Patricia Valasquez. The Wayúu Tayá foundation was created in order to help improve the lives of Latin – American indigenous people while maintaining and respecting their traditions, culture and beliefs.
For the Wayúu people, knowing how to weave is a symbol of creativity, intelligence and wisdom, a practice that is past on from one generation to the next.
For the most part, the designs are patterns of geometrical shapes. Each bag (called Susu in the Wayunaiki language) is made by one woman; therefore each design is one of a kind. Weaving these bags is arduous work. It takes a Guajira woman about 20 eight-hour-days to complete just one bag.
Wayúu Tayá is working on its new program: The Roof Project.
The Roof Project is a unique, pan-Latin American, fully integrated Life Center. The Center combines an ambulatory care hospital, a preschool with a supplementary feeding clinic, and a women’s center where local women will be taught and paid to make handcrafts while maintaining their culture.
There first Roof Center opened last May in Mara, Venezuela. At Wayúu Tayá's Roof Centers, children now receive two meals a day while they attend school. Furthermore, in the ambulatory nutrition center the children’s parents will have access to crucial nutritional and medical information and supplies. The women’s center is providing the Wayúu women with access to education, family planning, and parenting classes.
Program participants will be provided with the tools necessary to create their handcrafts such as bags. The Foundation will sell the handcrafts, thereby raising funds on behalf of the Wayúu people. The objective is to encourage these women to continue their tradition of handcraft and maintain their culture, while at the same time creating a viable workforce for them. Limerick’s hopes you will support the Wayúu Tayá Foundation by purchasing a Susu that was especially designed for Limerick’s PJ’s Comfort® breast pump.
